ZINC
Zinc is one of the most three common non-ferrous metal in use, trailing only aluminum, and copper. These three metals are used to increase the resistance for corrosion of iron and steel, in manufacturing die-casting alloys, roof covering materials and rubber industry as (ZnO).
ZINC MINERALS
Zinc is most commonly used metal in the industry trailing iron, aluminium and copper. It is applied to increase the resistance for corrosion of iron and steel, in manufacturing of special alloys and brass used in die-casting, roof covering materials and rubber and battery industry. Measured reserves of metal zinc in the world are around 200 million tonnes, while Turkey has 2.3 tonnes of reserves. Australia, USA, Canada, and China have the largest reserves of zinc in the world. World’s annual zinc production is 8 million tonnes and 0.5 million tonnes are produced from recycled scrap.
Turkey produces around 60 thousand tonnes of zinc annually. 10 thousand tones of this amount is recycled from the ore sent abroad while 20-30 thousand tonnes are imported.
Most important mineral in nature is sphalerite from which zinc metal is produced. Generally, zinc minerals are classisifed in six groups.
Zinc blend Sphalerite, zincblend): Fortmula is ZnS and theorically it contains 67% Zinc, 33% Sulphur. Generally isomorphic with FeS. Iron ratio can sometimes go up to 20%. This black mineral is called Marmatite and it contains CdS and MnS
